The Hidden Costs of Language Barriers

Cover Hidden Costs of Language Barriers

Based on a research study conducted by Relay in November 2024¹, bilingual employees lose about 4 hours per week translating for others—costing businesses an average of $7,500 per bilingual employee per year².

Every time a non-English-speaking employee receives a translation, it’s time they’re not doing their primary job. That lost productivity adds up to about $1,800 per ESL (English as a Second Language) worker annually³.

To estimate the total hidden cost, we added:

  • The average annual cost of bilingual employees being pulled away to translate ($7,500), and

  • The average annual cost of ESL employees stopping their work to receive translation ($1,800)

Then we multiplied that combined number by the reported average number of bilingual and ESL employees per site.

  • ¹ In November 2024, we surveyed 200+ professionals in manufacturing and warehousing environments with 50+ employees and multiple languages spoken on site.
² The $7,500 estimate was calculated by multiplying the average bilingual worker’s salary by the average percentage of time they spend translating for others.
³ The $1,800 estimate was based on average annual earnings of an ESL worker and the percentage of time they’re pulled away from their job to receive translation.
